Barley Saturday

The biggest event in Cardigan’s calender is Barley Saturday, which has been held on the last Saturday in April since the 19th Century. It is an annual event that was started in 1871 when originally the local farmers had finally finished planting all the spring seed and decided to show off their stallions for stud through the streets of Cardigan. They also used it as a great opportunity to recruit farm labourers for the new season. It was only stopped during World War 2 but was brought back to life again in 1961. So this Saturday the 30th the streets of Cardigan will again be lined with hundreds of people from all over Wales and further afield. First the stallions will be run through the main street, they then go to the fields for judging. Then the tractors, new and vintage, will be paraded through the town, followed by the classic cars and motorbikes. It’s a lovely day out for the family and you don’t really need to be a fan of everything rural to enjoy it.
